Keats Camps needs you!

Keats Camps needs you! Whether you have a passion for counselling campers and LEAD, love to lead worship, have gifted administrative skills, love working in operations such as maintance or our kitchen – we have a spot for you. If you are passionate about introducing children and youth to Jesus, showing them what God’s love looks like, and have a heart to serve, check out the positions we have.

Keats has both paid positions and volunteer positions. Paid staff are hired for the summer, and are required to attend pre-camp training in mid-June, and working all of July and August. Camps run 7 days a week, which means time off each week is a 24 or 36 hour period. Volunteers come to camp from a week to the whole summer (better plan for the whole summer – once you get here, you won’t want to leave!) in various departments around the camp. From lifeguarding to nursing to program staff – we need tons of volunteers and would love to talk with you about your heart to serve at Keats.

Bridge Staff are our Senior Leadership Team, overseeing and executing the big picture and program of Keats, while mentoring and discipling the rest of the summer staff.

Opportunities abound for volunteers in the summer. If you have a heart for Jesus and a desire to serve at camp, even if you can’t spend your entire summer with us, we have short term opportunities in many of the departments at camp. Let’s talk about what you are passionate about and how you might serve with us.

The regular paid staff spreads throughout the camp’s operational areas and covers all bases to make sure that everything runs smoothly and everyone is having a great time. See below for all positions.

Captain of Games

General Responsibilities

The Captain of Games is responsible for creating and leading camp activities. As a team, Captains develop and implement a high quality program involving activities, events and camp theme.  The aim is to create a ‘wow’ experience for all the campers.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. This position begins part-time in the spring. Captains are expected to be available to meet with the Program team to begin defining a camp theme and planning Program components.
  2. With the program team, plan games, activities, and Theme Day and write and practice skits
    1. Work with Commodore and Program Director to budget for and purchase supplies needed
  3. Lead daily games and activities, including daily campwide games (Evening Rec), large group activities (Fleet Time), Theme Day, skits, and any other special events
    1. Organize program support and LEAD involvement in games
    2. Explain rules and lead games in an enthusiastic manner 
  4. Oversee writing and choreography of welcome dance and skit
  5. Be on the microphone for announcements at all meals
  6. Attend semiweekly senior staff meetings, daily Staff Meetings, Watch and evening prayer when finished other job duties

Minimum Qualifications

  1. A Christian, pursuing a relationship with Christ
  2. Has experience or is confident in giving instructions, speaking in front of and managing large crowds (300 people)
  3. Has skills in organizing and executing games
  4. Strong verbal and written communication skills
  5. Is a team player
  6. Takes initiative
  7. Ideally has OFA3

Captain of Games is a paid position at a rate of $138.64 for every day worked and includes food & accommodation, with one 24/36-hour period off each week.

Captain of Program Support

General Responsibilities

The Captain of Program Support is responsible for creating and leading camp activities alongside the other Captains, developing and implementing a high quality program involving activities, events and camp theme. Their role has a distinct focus on leading and directing the Program Support (Volunteer Summer Staff) team. 

The Captain of Program Support ensures the Program Support team develops a servant leadership team ethos.  Through group leadership and individual mentorship, their goal is to encourage and challenge these young adults in their faith and build Christian leaders with a sincere desire to serve the Lord.  They will also give clear direction to the Program Support in their roles and responsibilities as they support the Captains.

*In the event that there are not enough volunteers to have Program Support, the Captain of Program Support will act as a Captain of Games.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. This position begins part-time in the spring. Captains are expected to be available to meet with the Program team to begin defining a camp theme and planning Program components.
  2. Work with the Commodore to develop a daily and summer-long schedule for the Program Support
  3. With the assistance of Captains and Commodore, lead daily Program Support meetings to encourage spiritual growth
  4. Offer clear direction of responsibilities, jobs and schedules for the Program Support
  5. Coordinate Program Support to assist Captains in executing special events, skits and themes
  6. Develop program theme, games, activities, welcome dance and events along with Program Captains and Commodore
  7. Lead daily games and activities with Program Captains
    1. Create games
    2. Organize staff and LEAD involvement in games
    3. Explain rules and lead games in an enthusiastic manner 
  8. Assist Captains in leading meals
  9. Develop an ethos within the Program Support and model servant leadership 
  10. Provide encouragement and direction for the Program Support in their roles
  11. Enter into mentoring relationships with Program Support
  12. Mediate between Program Support conflicts
  13. Attend semiweekly senior staff meetings
  14. Attend Staff meetings, Watch and evening prayer and ensure Program Support are also attending.

Compensation

Captain of Program Support is a paid position at a rate of $$138.64 for every day worked and includes food & accommodation, with one 24/36-hour period off each week.

Captain of Scheduling

General Responsibilities

The Captain of Scheduling works under the Commodore to schedule cabin leaders, program support and crew members on Seatrades (activity blocks), as well as schedule cabin leader and program support days off and breaks. They ensure each activity has trained, capable staff to run the activity and equips cabin leaders with campers’ activity information. They work with the Commodore and Program Director to order new equipment when equipment is lacking, damaged or unsafe to use. 

Specific Responsibilities

  1. This position begins part-time in the spring. Captains are expected to be available to meet with the Program team to begin defining a camp theme and planning Program components.
  2. Create activity & day off schedule for cabin leaders and program support
  3. Ensure Seatrades are run correctly
  4. Work with Commodore and Program Director to order replacement equipment
  5. Attend daily staff meetings to explain daily schedule & expectations
  6. Keep camp program running on schedule by ringing the bell
  7. Coordinate campers choosing Seatrades and communicate camp rules on camper arrival days
  8. Oversee campers being dismissed at the dining hall
  9. In the months leading up to camp, meet with Program team to begin defining a camp theme and planning Program components
  10. Works alongside the program team to assist with any programming pieces
  11. Attend semiweekly senior staff meetings, Watch and evening prayer when finished other job requirements

Commodore

General Responsibilities

The Commodore begins in the spring and is one of the senior staff members. The Commodore is responsible for overseeing the planning and implementation of summer program, specifically creating and developing camp themes, games, programs, activities, skits, and welcome dance. 

The Commodore oversees the Captains (program team), supporting them, managing issues, and supporting other summer staff as needs arise. They also support the Program Director in overseeing and discipling the Bridge Staff (senior staff) team, through mentorship and assisting in leading staff meetings.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. With the program team, develop, implement, lead and instruct all camp themes, games, programs, activities, skits, as well as the welcome dance.
  2. Assist Program Director in planning the weekly program and schedule and communicate this to all departments.
  3. Work closely with the Program Director for staff issues, staff discipleship, and overseeing the big picture of camp operations.
  4. Ensure program support staff are supervised and discipled well on the program team
  5. Assist leading morning staff meetings and evening prayer
  6. Assist leading semiweekly senior staff meetings

 Minimum Qualifications

  1. Minimum 21 years old

  3. Able to work independently and on a team
  4. Strong verbal and written communication skills
  5. Willingness to be outgoing and enthusiastic

Dates

The Commodore role is a 4-6 month position which begins in the spring, at a time determined in conversation with the Executive Director and Program Director.

Compensation

  1. Receives a 24/36 hour period of time off each week.
  2. The daily wage for the Commodore will be commensurate with experience.

Crew Director

General Responsibilities

In a team of two (a male and a female), the Crew Directors are responsible for preparing and executing the Crew Program. The Crew Program is intended to prepare young people to work on staff at Keats Camps. This requires young people to learn to lead in a Christ-like way and to be equipped with the skills of cabin leading (leading Bible studies, small groups, games, activities, and cleaning).  The Crew Program is designed to achieve this through sessions to discuss and teach about Christianity, one on ones between Crew members, cleaning the camper washrooms, and providing opportunities for Crew to shadow cabin leaders during Bible studies, assisting with activities and games, small group leading, and sleeping in cabins.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Develop and lead/facilitate daily meetings on topics of leadership and Christian growth following the curriculum laid out and in discussion with the Program Director
  2. Responsible for the wellbeing of up to 24 young people on a daily basis
  3. Provide leadership and resources for the Crew participants as they serve in the camp
  4. Enter into mentoring relationships with Crew participants
  5. :Lead Crew participants in responsibility for
    1. Luggage on boat days
    2. Overseeing cabin clean up
    3. Cleaning camper and camp bathrooms daily
    4. Dispose of garbage on a daily basis
  6. Work with the Program team to give Crew experience helping with games and running activities
  7. Work with Head Skippers to prepare Crew participants to experience sleeping in cabins as well as support in leading bible studies or small group discussions.
  8. Assist the Food Services Manager to give Crew participants experience in the kitchen
  9. Introduce Crew participants to the Facilities Manager and work on maintenance projects
  10. Attend semiweekly senior staff meetings

Qualifications

  1. Is capable of training the next generation of Keats leaders
  2. Has a passion for and experience working with young people aged 15-17
  3. Has the ability or experience leading small and large group Bible teaching sessions
  4. Is a mature Christian with a heart for discipleship
  5. Has skills developing sessions relevant to young people concerning both faith and leadership development
  6. Able to work with one other person to form a successful leadership team
  7. Ideally has Class 5 driver’s license and a boating license or willing to obtain

Compensation

Crew Director is a paid position at a rate of $138.64 for every day worked and includes food & accommodation, with one 24/36-hour period off each week.

Deckhand Director

General Responsibilities

In a team of three, the Deckhand Directors are responsible for planning and leading up to 16 Deckhands per session in a variety of jobs within the dining hall including kitchen, janitorial, and maintenance tasks. In addition, Deckhand Directors plan and lead daily sessions on core Christian themes, providing spiritual leadership for Deckhands. They will lead these sessions following the curriculum provided and in discussion with the Program Director before camp begins.  The Deckhand program is intended to encourage and challenge youth in their faith and build Christian leaders with a sincere desire to serve the Lord.

Lastly, Deckhand Directors will coordinate adventure times where Deckhands will go on day trip activities to be challenged and grow as a group.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Plan discipleship and leadership training sessions according to the curriculum laid out
  2. Lead and facilitate daily meetings on the topics of leadership and Christian growth
  3. Responsible for the well-being of Deckhands
  4. Provide leadership and direction for the Deckhand participants as they serve in the custodial work of the camp
  5. Enter into mentoring relationships with Deckhand participants
  6. Communicate with and assist the Food Services Manager regarding dining hall/dishpit cleaning procedures
  7. Maintain the cleanliness of the camp by delegating and leading the Deckhands in cleaning tasks, under the direction of the Executive Director.
  8. Ensure the smooth operation of meal times by delegating and leading the deckhands in tasks, including setting tables, serving food, cleaning dishes, and cleaning of dishwashing areas.

Minimum Qualifications

Compensation

Deckhand Director is a paid position at a rate of $138.64 for every day worked and includes food & accommodation, with one 24/36-hour period off each week.

Head Skipper (Head Counsellor)

General Responsibilities

The team of 2 Head Skippers (Head Cabin Leaders) are responsible for supporting ~32 Cabin Leaders (Skippers and First Mates), both practically and emotionally/spiritually. Their role includes dealing with camper issues such as homesickness and bullying as well as supporting cabin leaders when issues of a more serious nature arise.  The Head Skippers support and take initiative in meeting with cabin leaders to ensure they have a place to talk things through and feel heard, as well as serving as their supervisors and providing correction as needed.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Support cabin leaders with camper conflicts as they arise
  2. Support cabin leaders with camper homesickness as it arises
  3. Meet with Skippers individually weekly to check in, offer support, and pray
  4. Act as a sounding board to Skippers so you are able to correct in the moment or advocate for Skippers and First Mates throughout summer in senior staff meetings
  5. Supervise Skipper and First Mates in completing their role tasks, providing correction as needed
  6. Facilitate a Skipper lunch Tues-Saturday
    1. Use time effectively to build community among Skippers, discuss issues, and facilitate a community of encouragement
  7. Facilitate a First Mate meeting Tues-Saturday
    1. Use this time effectively to check in, have fun, and discuss Christian issues
  8. Work with the Program Director to arrange weekly cabin pairings of Skippers and First Mates
  9. Be available on camper arrival days to assist Program Director with needs
  10. Attend Staff Meetings, Watch and evening prayer when finished other job requirements
  11. Attend semiweekly senior staff meetings

Mariners Innkeeper

General Responsibilities         

Responsible for running and managing the Mariner’s Inn (camp store) to see that sale and distribution of snacks and apparel are done in an orderly manner. This involves stocking the store on a weekly basis, ordering inventory, ensuring financial compliance and communicating with the Office Manager on a regular basis, while providing excellent customer services for all guests. The Innkeeper will also provide leadership for the Innkeeper’s Assistant and anyone else who is assigned to work in the store.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Supervising and assisting in daily store operations
    1. Maintaining a welcoming, tidy and professional atmosphere
    2. Providing excellent customer service to all guests
    3. Daily cash-outs from walk-in sales, ensuring a balanced daily reconciliation.
    4. Weekly guest account cash-ins and cash-outs.
    5. Daily and consistent stocking and cleaning of Mariners Inn
  2. Communications
    1. Working closely and effectively with the Office Manager to schedule appropriate, maximized hours of operation
    2. Liaising with supplier representatives as needed
    3. Communicating guest feedback to Office Manager in a timely manner
  3. Administration
    1. Maintaining accurate reporting of guest and staff account deposits and withdrawals
    2. Ordering and maintaining inventory of merchandise in conjunction with Office Manager
    3. Attending semiweekly senior staff and daily staff meetings

Minimum Qualifications

Ropes Course Director

General Responsibilities

The Ropes Course Director oversees all areas of high ropes, low ropes, rock climbing wall, and giant swing and will oversee the staff that operates these activities. Safety is the top priority and the Ropes Course Director will test equipment and maintain a standard of safety for all activities during the summer. They will set up and take down equipment daily, as well as maintain equipment. They are responsible for making all aspects of the Rope Course a safe and fun place for the campers and staff.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Oversee high ropes, low ropes, rock climbing wall and giant swing
  2. Organize and establish all Ropes Course safety procedures including:
    1. Provide training to ensure that staff assigned to the Ropes Course can lead safely
    2. Organize, maintain and recommend purchases for all safety equipment
    3. Enforce all safety regulations and procedures with staff and campers
  3. Develop and organize the Ropes Course program for the camp:
    1. Coordinate with Captain of Scheduling to ensure all staff scheduled on the Ropes Course are trained
    2. Organize free time on Ropes Course
    3. Organize and run special Ropes Course nights for the different departments
  4. Organize and maintain all Ropes Course equipment:
    1. Repair and upkeep
    2. Recommend products and coordinate purchases
    3. Organize appropriate storage after use
  5. Attend semiweekly senior staff meetings, daily staff meetings, Watch and evening prayer

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Minimum 21 years old 
  2. Must have leadership experience and be able to lead a team 
  3. The ability to respond to urgent situations in a level-headed and calm manner
  4. Experience with harnesses, knots, and ropes courses
  5. Must be certified on Ropes Course before the summer (training provided)
  6. A professing Christian who is actively pursuing a relationship with Christ 
  7. Must have initiative and the ability to work hard

Ropes Course Director is a paid position at a rate of $138.64 for every day worked and includes food & accommodation, with one 24/36-hour period off each week.

Waterfront Director

General Responsibilities

The Waterfront Director oversees all areas of waterfront, including lifeguards, boat drivers, activities, and all program happening on waterfront. They are responsible for making waterfront a safe, and fun place for the campers and staff. The Waterfront Director ensures safety and a great atmosphere through effective leadership, as well as manages any conflict on the waterfront team. The Waterfront Director acts as an overseer to respond to needs as they arise.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Organize and establish all waterfront safety procedures including:
    1. Ensuring all waterfront staff and program staff assigned to waterfront are trained
    2. Organize, maintain and recommend purchases for all safety equipment
    3. Enforce all waterfront safety regulations and procedures with staff and campers
  2. Develop and organize the waterfront program for the camp:
    1. Work with Head Lifeguard to schedule and train lifeguards
    2. Organize free time on waterfront
    3. Organize and run special waterfront nights for departments
  3. Organize and maintain all waterfront equipment:
    1. Recommend products and coordinate purchases through the Yeoman with permission from Program Director
    2. Organize appropriate storage after use
    3. Notify the Facilities Manager regarding any maintenance issues
    4. Maintain docks, floats, moorings and buildings as directed by the Facilities Manager, including their placement and removal before and after the summer
  4. Along with the Head Lifeguard, provide spiritual leadership for the waterfront staff through regularly scheduled waterfront staff meetings
  5. Attend semiweekly senior staff meetings
  6. Oversee the waterfront team’s participation in program activities when available
  7. Attend and oversee that department attends Watch and evening prayer when finished all other job requirements
  8. Because of the mature nature of this role, the Waterfront Director may be asked to assist in additional duties when available from work duties.

Qualifications

  1. Must have leadership experience and be able to lead a team
  2. Minimum NL certified and CPR-C
    1. OFA3 ideal
  3. PCOC boating license and boat driving experience
  4. Must have the ability to lead small group and Bible teaching discussions
  5. A Christian with a desire to lead others to Christ
  6. Takes initiative and the ability to work hard
  7. Must be able to create a plan, delegate, and oversee to complete long-term projects.

Compensation

Waterfront Director is a paid position at a rate of $138.64 for every day worked and includes food & accommodation, with one 24/36-hour period off each week.

Worship Director

General Responsibilities

The Worship Director is responsible for developing and leading the evening “Watch” (worship service).  The Worship Director will be the primary worship leader both at Watch and morning staff meetings.  The Worship Director will seek out musicians, a/v capable staff, and other leaders to develop the worship service.  The Worship Director will organize worship team practices.  The goal is to have worship times that are authentic and characterized by high quality music.  Furthermore, as the leader of Watch, the Worship Director is the primary contact for the camp speaker each week, which includes making sure accommodations are prepared, welcoming at the boat, supporting and making them feel welcomed at camp.  

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Find out who is musical on the staff team and form different worship teams
  2. Create a rotating schedule for worship teams
  3. Schedule worship team practice times
  4. Develop the ethos and structure for “Watch”
  5. Be the primary contact person for the speaker, including preparing accommodations, welcoming them at the boat, and making them feel comfortable at camp
  6. Collaborate with the speaker of the week to coordinate the music and make sure it ties in with their themes
  7. Lead worship throughout Bridge Staff weekend, pre-camp, staff camp and daily morning staff meetings
  8. Jump in where needed if the Program Team needs extra assistance
  9. Train younger musicians, providing opportunities for growth
  10. Work with a potential Worship Intern, training them in what leadership looks like and providing opportunities for the Intern to lead
  11. Attend semiweekly senior staff meetings, Watch, and evening prayer
  12. Play for Sunday church service
  13. Available on camper arrival days to Program Director to assist when needs arise

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Must have a passion for and experience leading worship
  2. Must be positive, enthusiastic, and gifted musically
  3. Must be comfortable leading worship for 300-500 people
  4. Must have skills in coordinating musicians
  5. Takes initiative
  6. Must be a professing Christian, actively pursuing a relationship with Christ, and eager to bring others into worship of Christ.

Worship Director is a paid position at a rate of $138.64 for every day worked and includes food & accommodation, with one 24/36-hour period off each week.

Yeoman

General Responsibilities

The Yeoman is the hub of all on-island office operations. This includes (but is not limited to) communication with stakeholders, responsibility for financial and administrative management, and organizing on and off island operations. The Yeoman is the primary contact person in the camp, including emergency situations. The ability to multitask, handle stressful situations with ease, and communicate efficiently and professionally are essential.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Communication Hub
    1. Be first point of contact for all stakeholders, including parents, outside organizations, Executive and summer staff.
    2. Responsible for the camp phone, email and mail, distributing messages and following up on actions in a timely manner.
    3. As registrar, work with Head Skippers and Program Director to ensure all campers are checked in and accounted for quickly and efficiently upon arrival to and departure from camp.
    4. Manage communication, transportation, resources and detailed log during emergency situations.
  2. Administrative
    1. Organize cabin assignments and create weekly reports for Department Heads.
    2. Manage and account for cash and card transactions that go through Yeoman’s office.
    3. Organize and assist bookkeeper with invoices for purchasing and incoming bills, donations, and requisition forms.
    4. Attend semiweekly senior staff meetings, and daily summer staff meetings.
    5. As a member of the senior staff, the Yeoman will have increased responsibility due to their knowledge of the inner working of the camp
  3. Transport and Purchasing
    1. Make a schedule for the Ensign and provide necessary equipment and/or funds to make the trip possible.
    2. Collect all payments, orders, products etc. for Ensign runs.
    3. Organize boat trips to Gibsons or Langdale..

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Minimum 21 years old
  2. Able to multitask
  3. Ability to handle stressful situations and large workloads in a calm and professional manner
  4. Experience with computers and Microsoft Office.
  5. Experience with CampBrain or databases an asset.
  6. Professionalism and strong work ethic, able to work long hours
  7. Able to work independently and manage the Yeoman’s Assistant
  8. Experience with finance.
  9. Able to problem-solve and find solutions for challenges
  10. Excellent interpersonal skills

Camp Nurse

General Responsibilities

The camp nurse is an integral part of running Keats’ summer season. Below are our procedures for running Sick Bay (the treatment centre) while you are volunteering with us.

At Keats, we have a few OFA Level 3 certified workers, and all of our senior cabin leaders (Skippers) are trained in basic first aid.

Before the campers arrive, the Yeoman (Office Administrator) will have printed off and placed into a binder all camper medical reports for the week (including medication and allergies).  These reports will have camper’s medical information, allergies and medications.

The first afternoon that campers arrive, their cabin leaders will bring them to Sick Bay to drop off all medication. We collect all medication from campers and their medication must be locked away. Campers will need to schedule a time with you to take their medication for the day. A good time for this is usually right before or after a meal.

On the final day of camp, each cabin’s medication is returned to their cabin leader to be distributed back to campers.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Medication Administration Record: Each camper that needs daily medication will have a “Medication Administration Record” attached to their camper file. If a camper bring medication that we have not been informed of, you may need to attach this form to their file. Some campers may forget to come to you for their medication and you may need to track them/their cabin leader down. Once you have given them their medication, please sign off on the Med Admin Record.
  2. Nurses Notes: If a camper comes to you with a minor first aid issue, a dressing change, insect bite, sickness, etc, you will need to record the relevant information on the Nurses Notes form and placed in the camper’s file.
  3. Supplies: An inventory of supplies will be kept by our office team, who will endeavour to keep enough stock on hand prior to your arrival. However, if we are running low, please let us know so we can promptly replenish them.
  4. Occupational First Aid Assessment: This form is for serious first aid incidents where a camper or staff needs an in-depth record or needs to go to the hospital for further treatment.
  5. Incident Report:  If there is a major accident or injury, we require an incident report to be filled out, if you provide any assistance or treatment.
  6. Communications: There may be times when a guest has to go to the hospital or clinic. You will need to alert the Yeoman (who will arrange the transport), and make sure that any relevant records are passed onto the Yeoman so that they can accompany the guest to the hospital or clinic.

Compensation

Nurses are volunteer staff, who will arrive and depart with the guests.

First Mate

General Responsibilities

Along with the Skipper (Senior Cabin Leader), First Mates are responsible for the safety and wellbeing of 10-12 campers. They work to develop relationships with campers and be physically, emotionally and spiritually present to their needs. They lead activities, assist younger campers with basic needs, participate in evening games with their cabin, participate in skits prepared by Program, contribute to a positive camp atmosphere, lead daily Bible studies, supervise their cabin during Watch, supervise their cabin during meals, participate daily in camp clean up, supervise campers during free time and facilitate cabin discussions daily. This position is essential to the success of the camp.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Support Skipper in their role as Senior Cabin Leader
  2. Assist with daily small group discussions
  3. Instruct activities during Seatrades (activities) and free time
  4. Be responsible for the safety and whereabouts of campers at all times
  5. Show enthusiasm and commitment in all activities
  6. Demonstrate Christ-like attitude and lifestyle to campers

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Entering Grade 12 or older
  2. Experience working with youth and children
  3. Must be positive, enthusiastic, and patient with children
  4. Must be a follower of Christ with an understanding of the Bible and a desire to disciple campers

Compensation

First Mate is a volunteer position, with alternating 24 and 36-hour periods off each week as arranged by the Captain of Scheduling.

Innkeepers Jr. Assistant

General Responsibilities

The Innkeeper’s Assistant helps the Mariner’s Innkeeper in all retail duties to run Mariner’s Inn (camp store). They work in the Inn on a daily basis with customers, assist with stocking, cash-outs and perform inventory, as delegated by the Innkeeper. The position includes a number of retail related tasks as well as money and account management.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Assisting in daily store operations
    1. Maintaining a welcoming, tidy and professional atmosphere
    2. Providing excellent customer service to all guests
    3. Daily cash-outs from walk-in sales, ensuring a balanced daily reconciliation.
    4. Weekly guest account cash-ins and cash-outs.
    5. Daily and consistent stocking and cleaning of Mariners Inn
  2. Attending daily staff meetings

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Entering Grade 12 or older
  2. Office, computer, and till experience helpful
  3. Able to work as part of a team

Junior Bosun

  1. General maintenance tasks around property (as defined by Facilities Manager), which can include:

  3. Lifeguard during Seatrade and free time blocks

Ropes Course Assistant

General Responsibilities

The Ropes Course Assistant helps the Ropes Course Director in the smooth and safe operation of high ropes, low ropes, rock climbing wall, and giant swing. Under the direction of the Director, they will lead Ropes activities during Seatrades and Free Time (daily activity blocks) and any special events. They will also assist with the daily set up and take down of equipment and assist camp in other departments as required.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Assist Ropes Course Director in overseeing high ropes, low ropes, rock climbing wall and giant swing
  2. Run ropes activities during activity blocks and any special events
  3. Assist in setting up and taking down of ropes equipment
  4. Attend daily staff meetings, Watch and evening prayer

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Minimum 18 years old as of July 1
  2. Experience with harnesses, knots, and ropes courses an asset
  3. Must be certified on Ropes Course before the summer (training provided)
  4. Minimum one month commitment

Volunteer Summer Staff (VSS)

General Responsibilities

Volunteer Summer Staff (VSS) are integral to the running of camp. In this role, VSS will be assigned to a department on a weekly basis, dependent on the need of the camp. Possible placements include:

  • Program Support (report to Captain of Program Support)
  • Kitchen (report to Food Services Manager)
  • First Mate (report to Head Skipper)
  • Maintenance (report to Facilities Manager)

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Entering Grade 12 or older
  2. Follower of Christ
  3. Servant hearted and adaptable

Compensation

VSS is volunteer position, with one 24/36 hour period off each week.

Boat Supervisor

General Responsibilities:                                                                                                                 

The Boat Supervisor is responsible for safely driving the boat for all boating activities, ensuring guests and staff have a safe, fun experience. Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, the Boat Supervisor will ensure boats are maintained. The Boat Supervisor will assist on the waterfront where necessary, and will also have the responsibility of providing leadership for those who operate the boats on waterfront.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Drive boats for all activity times and special events.
  2. Assist Lifeguards with daily set-up and take-down of waterfront equipment.
  3. Coach other boat drivers while ensuring that the boats are operated in a safe and responsible manner.
  4. Report to the Facilities Manager any mechanical concerns or damages to the boats.
  5. Properly clean and store boats at the end of each day, as instructed by the Facilities Manager.
  6. Participate in weekly washing and oil change.
  7. Make sure the boats have gas and are ready for all activities and special events.
  8. Document all boat operational times.
  9. Attend daily staff meetings, Watch, and evening prayer.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Minimum 20 years old
  2. Boating license (SVOP) or willing to obtain (training provided)
  3. Mechanical knowledge and experience
  4. Experience driving boats
  5. Experience pulling wakeboarders and tubers
  6. Experience coaching wakeboarding
  7. Lifeguarding experience is helpful
  8. Able to work on a team
  9. Active follower of Christ

Boat Supervisor is a paid position at a rate of $138.64 for every day worked and includes food & accommodation, with one 24/36-hour period off each week.

Bosun- General Maintenance

General Responsibilities

The Bosuns work in the facilities department as part of a team to see that the site and all necessary buildings and equipment are in good running order for guests and staff. They report to the Facilities Manager to see all tasks and responsibilities are carried out in a timely manner.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. General maintenance around property (as defined by Facilities Manager).  This could look like:
    1. Fixing plumbing in cabins
    2. Building maintenance/repair projects
    3. Construction projects
    4. Transporting people back and forth from Gibsons and Langdale
  2. Works with the maintenance team to drive boats when needed, or other duties as directed by the Facilities Manager.
  3. Attend daily staff meetings, Watch, and evening prayer.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Minimum 19 years old
  2. Class 5 B.C. driver’s license
  3. Boating license (SVOP) or willing to obtain (training provided), and boat driving experience is an asset
  4. Experience in construction and maintenance projects.
  5. A self-starter with a strong sense of urgency and work ethic.
  6. Active follower of Christ

Cook

General Responsibilities

Cooks work in the kitchen as part of a team to prepare healthy, delicious food to serve to all campers, staff, and guests in a safe and professional manner.

  1. Under the Supervision of the Food Services Manager, prepare high quality meals in a timely manner.
  2. Attend Staff Meetings, Watch and evening prayer when finished all other job requirements.

Ensign

General Responsibilities

The Ensign is responsible for all off-island duties throughout the summer. Due to the camp’s island location, there is much that needs to happen in Gibsons and Vancouver and the Ensign will correspond with the Yeoman (office administrator) regarding town-runs. In addition, the Ensign will be the driver for trips to either the medical clinic in Gibsons or the hospital in Sechelt, should the need arise, again as co-ordinated by the Yeoman. When not doing runs, the Ensign assists the maintenance team.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Off-island boat runs.
    1. Communicate with the Yeoman about any and all runs
    2. Be ready to have any work interrupted to care for the transportation needs of an injured/sick person immediately
  2. General maintenance around property when not doing town runs (as defined by Facilities Manager). This could look like:
    1. Fixing plumbing in cabins
    2. Building maintenance/fixing
    3. Construction projects
    4. Lawn and garden maintenance
  3. Attend staff meetings, Watch and evening prayer when finished all other job requirements.

Qualifications

  1. Has PCOC boaters license and boat driving experience
  2. Has Class 5 B.C. Drivers License

Head Lifeguard

General Responsibilities                                                                                                     

The Head Lifeguard is responsible to lead a team of lifeguards to ensure the safety of all campers and staff at waterfront. In addition, they will lead set-up and take-down of all equipment and be responsible for all aspects of leadership for the lifeguard team. Working under the the Waterfront Director, the Head Lifeguard is integral to ensuring the waterfront operates with quality staff and activities.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Assist with daily set-up and clean-up of waterfront equipment
  2. Ensure appropriate training of lifeguards
  3. Ensure safety at all times of campers and staff
  4. Along with the Waterfront Director, spiritually lead and mentor lifeguards
  5. Ensure appropriate emergency procedures are in place and practiced
  6. Lifeguard during activity blocks and special events
  7. Attend daily staff meetings informing staff on any updates or issues from waterfront, along with evening prayer and Watch

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Minimum 21 years old
  2. Current and valid NL certification
  3. Leadership experience and ability to delegate & oversee a team

Photographer / Social Media Coordinator

General Responsibilities  

The photographer uses their gifts in photography and editing to artistically capture a variety of high quality photos that help to demonstrate the camper experience at Keats. They will use these photos on social media to connect parents and the outside community of Keats with campers’ Keats experience.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Photograph all aspects of the camper experience
    1. Coordinate with cabin leaders to take cabin photos
    2. Communicate with Program team to capture all “highlights” of the week
    3. Photographer will be required to use their own camera and gear throughout the duration of this role
  2. Regularly update social media channels (Instagram, Facebook) using photos taken
  3. Take initiative to come up with exciting photo ideas 
  4. Organize all photos into a clear and easy-to use database for after-summer use
  5. Attend Staff Meetings, Watch and evening prayer when finished all other job requirements

  1. Must have experience and skills in photography

Skipper (Cabin Counsellor)

General Responsibilities

Skippers, alongside their junior cabin leader (First Mate), are responsible for the safety and wellbeing of 10-12 campers. They work to develop relationships with campers and be physically, emotionally and spiritually present to their needs. Skippers lead activities, assist younger campers with basic needs, participate in evening games with their cabin, participate in skits prepared by Program, contribute to a positive camp atmosphere, lead daily Bible studies, supervise their cabin during Watch, supervise their cabin during meals, participate daily in camp clean up, supervise campers during free time and facilitate cabin discussions daily. This position is essential to the success of the camp. 

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Guide campers in participating safely, successfully, and on time in all aspects of camp activities.
  2. Provide a safe, positive and fun cabin environment that encourages friendship building.
  3. Lead activities during Seatrades (activity blocks) and free time.
  4. Lead a daily Bible study and small group discussion.
  5. Mentor and empower a First Mate (Junior cabin leader)
  6. Mentor and empower members of the Crew (leader in training) program to be successful future cabin leaders
  7. Responsible for the safety and whereabouts of their campers
  8. Model a Christ-like attitude and lifestyle to campers
  9. Lead daily cabin time activities: i.e., Hikes, slip ‘n slide, etc.
  10. Participate in camp community life, attending daily staff meetings
  11. Create a safe, inclusive and encouraging atmosphere as a role model in the Summer Staff community

The Videographer is responsible for taking daily footage of activities, games and camp program in order to produce a weekly highlight video. They will assist program with any videos to enhance the camper experience, as well as creating promotional material for Keats Camps to use throughout the year.

  1. Work with Program team to capture the highlights of the weekly program
  2. Spend time with each cabin, getting footage of their camp experience
  3. Build a weekly highlight video
  4. Care for and maintain all video equipment
  5. Organize all videos into a clear and easy-to use database for after-summer use.
  6. Attend staff meetings, Watch, and evening prayer

Minimum Qualifications

  1. A Christian, pursuing a relationship with Christ.
  2. Experience filming and editing videos
  3. Able to work independently and meet strict weekly deadlines
